Cl1, Ulmo Honey
The honey
The Ulmo Honey is one of Chile´s emblematic flower honey. It was harvested in late summer, March 2025. It is very aromatic and with a spicy taste. It is also very dark when harvested, later it becomes ocher. It usually stays creamy.
As this year in most part of the region the harvest of this honey failed, we made a PCR test in order to be sure, and the result was a 75% monofloral ulmo honey. The Beekeeping
We are two beekeepers, Pia from Denmark and Silvio from Chile making honey in Patagonia. We have around 70 beehives in two apiarios in Río Puelo, Chile, in the middle of the temperate rainforest. This is the only forest of this kind in South America and from its flowerbearing trees you may obtain honeys which are unique in flavour and taste.
Our área is very rainy, more tan 2500 mm per year. In spite of the latitud, 41°, the same as Barcelona on the northern hemisphere the weather is quite cold, even though we are very close to the Andes Mountains, we rarely get snow. Summers are warm, but rainy as well. That makes beekeeping dificult, and very often one of our three harvests would fail. We have been in beekeeping since 1988, always innovating in products and methods, and we love sharing our passion for bees with tourists who come to Río Puelo - but the most expected visitors are the school kids from the Colegio Celestine Freinet (see the image) who come every year.
