Ch12, Stingless bee tree acid honey
The honey
The honey is a mixture of honey from two species of stingless bees: Tetragonula iridipennis and Tetragonula geissleri. The honey from Tetragonula iridipennis has a moderate balance of sweetness and sourness, tasting both sweet and tart, while that from Tetragonula geissleri is more acidic. The blend of the two results in a better taste.
It was extracted on August 10, 2025. The nectar sources mainly include wildflower honey from primeval forests and honeydew from rubber trees. In the traditional practices of local ethnic minorities, stingless bee honey is often consumed as a kind of medicine. Locals believe it has cough-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects. Consuming some when suffering from a cold or cough not only replenishes energy but also works well for relieving coughs. It is also beneficial for reducing inflammation during oral ulcers and gastroenteritis, and is quite effective in treating constipation. Locals also use the resinous wax from stingless bee hives as an adhesive in the process of making handicrafts. The beekeeping
The apiary is located beside Mangolong Reservoir, Jinuo Township, Jinghong City, Yunnan Province, China, covering an area of 10,000 square meters. It houses over 370 colonies of stingless bees, belonging to 6 species, with the surrounding area being a mixture of primeval tropical rainforests and rubber forests.
The breeder, Pan Peng, was born in 1994. He started raising stingless bees and founded a company in 2018, starting with an initial 106 colonies and exploring the breeding techniques from scratch. Before that, there were no large-scale breeders of stingless bees in China. Over the past 8 years, Pan Peng has been selling bee colonies and honey, as well as providing technical guidance to buyers on stingless bee breeding. Under his leadership, the breeding of stingless bees in China has developed rapidly. |
