Ir1, Bell Heather (Erica cinerea) Honey
The honey
Bell heather [Erica cinerea]
A rich warm dark ruby purple colour, like its flowers. With an aroma that can be smelt from several meters away from the apiary while the bees are bringing in the nectar. It is truly a taste of the mountains. Very sought after locally as it is a regional delicacy. H₂O content can be between 15 to 17 percent. The beekeeping
In the north east region of Ireland, the Cooley Mountains can be found with an elevation of 589 meters, and on the moors and heathland areas above the trees can be found bell heather — and bell heather only.
We move my bees up to the bell around mid-July for approximately six to eight weeks, when, if all goes well, we may get a crop of bell heather honey. Nectar does not flow every year, but if it’s a wet April, the bell will flow. |
