In Uruapan, Michoacán, fertile volcanic soils and a temperate climate create one of the world’s most renowned avocado-growing regions. When the avocado trees burst into bloom, they provide a rich but short-lived nectar flow, shaping honeys with distinctive aromas and flavors. Beekeeping here is inseparable from agriculture: hives are placed within the orchards, where bees pollinate the avocado blossoms and in return gather the resources to produce honey.
The landscape combines pine forests, avocado groves, and mountain air, offering a unique mosaic of biodiversity. For Chuy Gutiérrez and his family, tending to the hives during this season means working in tandem with the cycles of agriculture, demonstrating how apiculture and farming can strengthen one another. The honey produced reflects this dialogue, carrying the essence of volcanic earth, blossoms, and the intertwined work of pollinators and people. |
