In the heart of the Chihuahuan Desert, San Pedro, Coahuila stretches across a wide, flat valley where the extreme climate sets the rhythm of life. The vegetation is dominated by xerophilous scrub—mesquite, huizache, agaves, and cactus—that withstand the aridity while providing nectar and shelter for bees, allowing beekeeping to flourish as both an ancestral and present-day practice.
For 18+ years, beekeeper Pedro Pablo Sifuentes and his family have cared for these mesquite groves, creating sanctuaries for bees while providing natural reserves for the flora and fauna of this semi-arid ecosystem. In a region where illegal mesquite logging for firewood and charcoal threatens deforestation and soil erosion, his work becomes essential. The quality and flavors of the honey are the result of these invisible yet profound connections between bees, flowers, beekeepers, and territory. |
