The honey
Misitu Honey, harvested in June 2025 and extracted in the same month, originates from the diverse floral species of the Miombo woodlands, primarily Brachystegia, Julbernardia, and Isoberlinia trees. This wild, multifloral honey is renowned for its rich flavor, medicinal properties, and long shelf life. Its moisture content ranges between 16–18%.
Traditionally, Miombo honey has been valued in Tanzanian communities as both food and medicine. It is used as a natural sweetener in drinks, in the production of honey beer, and as a traditional remedy for wound healing, coughs, and digestive ailments. The beekeeping
Misitu Honey is a brand owned by the Tanzania Forest Services (TFS) Agency, which is mandated to manage national forests, bee reserves, forests on general land, and tree seed production. Within these reserves, the Agency operates 166 apiaries where honey and other bee products are produced. In addition to production, TFS carries out a range of activities such as protecting bee foraging habitats, supporting communities with beekeeping gear and equipment, encouraging both communities and the private sector to invest in bee product production and processing, promoting marketing initiatives for bee products, and fostering value addition and investment in the bee products industry.
The Sao Hill Plantation, one of the forest plantations managed by the Agency, owns t15 apiaries containing a total of 1,263 beehives. The plantation supports the production of honey, beeswax, and bee pollen, contributing significantly to the Agency’s beekeeping operations. It is situated in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania, within Mufindi District, Iringa Region. |
