Th5, Itama Stingless Bee Honey
The honey
Benefits: Research has demonstrated excellent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capacities, and the ability to inhibit the growth of pathogenic microorganisms and is rich in trehalulose—a rare, health-promoting sugar.
The beekeeping
Area: Narathiwat and Pattani Provinces, Thailand
Producers: Producers: Farmers in Narathiwat and Pattani (southernmost Thailand); stingless bee: Heterotrigona itama. Forest type: Agroforestry landscapes integrated with natural evergreen forest in southern Thailand. These forests have high ecological integrity and stable balance. Rearing this stingless bee species will not succeed or produce honey if the forest is degraded or subject to excessive natural disturbances. It represents harmonious coexistence between local communities and the forest (harmonization) such as lowland evergreen (dipterocarp) rainforest — extremely biodiverse “Sundaic” rainforest best examples at Hala-Bala Wildlife Sanctuary. Floral resources: Rubber, oil palm, durian, rambutan, mangosteen (seasonal fruits) along with native flowering plant species Anisoptera curtisii, Baccaurea brevipes. |
